FORM: Low branching tree with a rounded crown.

FOLIAGE: Thorny stems are clad with shallowly lobed, serrated, glossy dark green leaves. Leaves turn attractive shades of orange and red in Autumn.

FLOWERS: Fragrant clusters of white flowers in bloom in late Spring. Flowers are followed in Autumn by bright red fruits which remain on the tree throughout winter.

DESCRIPTION: The ‘Washington Thorn’ is chosen for its attractive flowers and foliage, bright red fruits and Autumn colour. It is a small, low-branching, deciduous tree with a rounded crown. Thorny stems are clad with glossy dark green leaves. Leaves turn attractive shades of orange and red in Autumn. Fragrant clusters of white flowers bloom in late Spring, followed in Autumn by bright red fruits which remain on the tree throughout winter.

LANDSCAPE USES: The hawthorn can be trimmed as a hedge or used as a windbreak.

TOLERANCES: Suitable to most soil types including clay, prefers a well drained spot in full sun, mulch and water well. Frost hardy.

TREE CARE: Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilize when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune tree when planting to encourage new growth.
