The Growing Edge – March 2016

This Month's Featured Trees

Today we are focusing on two spectacular foliage trees. They are put to great use as specimens, features and in avenues. They are surprisingly hardy and are unsurpassed for brilliant autumn colour.

Acer negundo

Sensation Maple

A spectacular, non-seed bearing tree with super branching structure and a well rounded shape. It grows taller and more rounded as it matures and has yellow green leaves in spring that turn to a variety of brilliant pinkish reds and yellows in autumn. It is drought tolerant and will do well in most conditions.

It reaches a mature height of 9 metres and width of 6 metres and grows at a moderate rate.
The Sensation Maple has small flowers with long drooping stamens in spring.
Adaptable to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions, including relatively wet sites, it does best in a full sun position. The Sensation Maple is also reasonably drought tolerant.
Sensation Maples are showy specimen or shade trees and also are a good choice for avenue and driveway plantings. They compliment Japanese gardens well and will brighten up any garden.

Cercis canadensis
Forest Pansy

A superb small tree that is an excellent choice for a landscape where an elegant, purple-leafed tree is required. It is a consistent performer, ideal for small areas.
The Forest Pansy reaches a height and width of 5 metres.
The tree has an open and low branching structure, forming a flat-topped canopy. The young branches have a distinct 'zig-zag' shape.

The large heart-shaped leaves of the Forest Pansy Tree open up in spring to a brilliant eye-catching shade of reddish-purple with a velvety-satin appearance, deepening to purplish-black then fading to purplish-green in summer, finally exhibiting brilliant yellow to orange autumn colours. Masses of small, pink, 'pea'-like flowers are borne in groups along the branches before the leaves appear in spring.

It tolerates both acid or alkaline soils but is easily stressed and resents prolonged dry or very wet sites. The Forest Pansy Tree prefers moist, deep, well drained and fertile soil.

The Leaves Are Falling!

Now that your deciduous leaves are starting to turn colour and fall, try to keep on top of the leaf litter if you want it off your lawn. It is much easier to remove small piles regularly than go out once all the leaves are dropped and deal with large piles of slippery foliage. The leaves can be used in the compost or as mulch. The fastest effective way to help break them down into usable organic matter is to run the mower over them and speed up the process.

What's Looking Great

Crepe Myrtles are coming to the end of their season, but there is still time to see them in their floral glory.

Many varieties are in stock with flowers ranging from white to pinks and purples. It is the ideal time to see for yourself exactly what flower colour you can have in your garden next Summer.
