This Month's Feature Tree
Large shiny leaves and dense foliage are directing all eyes to these trees in the nursery this month.
Acer platanoides
'Crimson Sentry'
With large leaves in a glossy deep purple, this dense foliage tree makes an excellent screen or small shade tree.
It has a strong upward habit while young, eventually spreading out.
The Crimson Sentry will reach a maximum height of 7 metres and a width of 4 metres.
Autumn foliage turns oranges, reds and browns.
These are fantastic trees for avenues or driveways and brightening up evergreen gardens.
Get Planting!
Take advantage of the extended cool season we are having this year and get some more planting done. Trees can be planted at any time of the year but is is less stressful for them on days below 25C. Remember a few basic things and you won't have any problems.
Water Regularly
Any plant coming out of a nursery is used to being watered at least once a day. The size of it's root ball in relation to the foliage requires a consistent supply of water to keep the foliage turgid and growing happily.
Stake
Many advanced trees are top heavy with their canopy easily able to make the tree tip over. Proper staking will ensure this doesn't happen and will allow the new roots to establish and not break with underground movement.
Mulch
Keep the moisture in the soil by providing a good layer of mulch above the rootball, just make sure you don't have the mulch built up around the base of the trunk and this can cause rot.
